Where does the 'iO' Name come from?
|
The name is pronounced ("EYE-oh") and is
the third largest of Jupiter's moons. The moons were
discovered by Galileo Galilei on January 7, 1610.
Galileo called the moons the "Medicean planets" and gave
them Roman numerial values I, II, III, and IV. In the
mid-1800's, the moons were given their official names - Io,
Europa, Ganymede, and Callisto - corresponding to characters
of mythology.
The name 'iO' has connections to Greek Mythology, and also to
the great scientist, Galileo; however, the name 'iO' was
selected for other reasons.
The moon Io is constantly undergoing change due to the
gravitational pull from Jupiter. Numerous volcanic eruptions
are seen emitting gases into space, while its core is being
remolded by the gravitational forces.
The daily life of Io is much like the daily life in the
business world - the atmosphere as we know is constantly being
remolded by outside forces. Io continues to survive in spite
of these forces.
These qualities inspire the staff of
iO Technologies, Inc.
to provide the best quality products and services that will
withstand the constantly changing environment that they must
operate in.
